Edkal offers solutions and services for enabling and accelerating drug discovery. These include data mining, text mining, data integration and knowledge management solutions and services
Spending on drug research and development keeps going up. The current cost of developing a new drug is estimated at US $ 1 billion as reported at UK DTI Bioinformatics Conference December 2005, and in spite of the high investments, the number of new medicines reaching the market each year is falling. Among the various reasons for this imbalance, one of the biggest bottlenecks in drug discovery is the escalating amount of information that confronts the researcher. Currently, it would take five years to read the new material that is being produced every 24 hours. This data pool has recently been swelled by the 30,000 human genes mapped by the human genome project which are yet to be fully understood and the new units of information that are being added to the Medline database at the rate of 40,000 every month.
Edkal offers various informatics solutions and services for enabling and accelerating drug discovery. These include:
- Data Mining
- Data Integration
- Knowledge Management Solutions & Services
- Bioinformatics Services
Data Mining
The promise for bioinformatics is that public genome data, mixed with proprietary sequence data, clinical data from previous drug efforts and other stores of information, could unearth clues about possible candidates for future drugs. The challenge of extracting knowledge from the above data draws upon research in statistics, databases, pattern recognition, machine learning, data visualization, optimization, and high-performance computing, to deliver advanced business intelligence and web discovery solutions. ::MORE
Data Integration
Lack of integration among instruments in analytical departments of today’s Drug Discovery companies have increased the workload of analytical chemists, who manually need to input result data’s to generate COA’s (Certificate of Analysis) electronically. This results in a lot of time delay considering the fact that more than 100 samples need to be tested on a daily basis. ::MORE
Knowledge Management
In major Drug Discovery and Pharmaceutical Companies, scientists work across multiple locations on similar or different projects and the key challenge as of today is to get them to work better and smarter together. ::MORE
