The corporate were the first to taste the advantages by implementing learning management systems. The proliferation of PCs and the bandwidth problems with the Internet has retained the CD as the best medium in which the content can be delivered.

Resource planning and Information systems
The major resources in an educational Institution are Teachers (along with their skills), classrooms, Library, Laboratory inventory, students and transport system. Software that assists institutions in planning and managing these resources most efficiently are Resource Planning and information systems. They also help to maintain the management information system. Timetable, Test scheduling and room allotment, Library, Laboratory inventory and Transport route allotment for students are some modules of a Resource planning system. The programs are available as Desktop, Client Server (LAN) and Internet versions. Edkal with its wide experience in ERP solutions brings best of technology solutions to provide Resource Planning and Information Systems for the Educational Institutions and the corporate.

Content Delivery Systems / Learning Management Systems
Content delivery systems are programs that deliver content on the screen out of a repository or database. The repository contains the content in the form of text, audio, video, graphics, and animation, shockwave files. The program accesses the required data, integrates into an html page and displays on the screen (browser screen on the internet Figure 1). Programs are available on desktops, client server systems and the Internet. The content delivery systems or the learning management systems come in varying complexity. Three such varieties are discussed below.

Type I:
Delivery systems meant for children have only delivery mechanism with little or no interaction as in Tutorials and Lessons. They are highly multimedia content intensive so as to make learning interesting. The tutorials and lessons distributed on CDs fall into this category. Normally the delivery system is simple and bundled with the content.

Type II:
Systems developed for adults and people, who can learn on their own, include features such as self-assessment, search and glossary. Minimal monitoring is provided to the administration for tracking the users.

Type III:
Advanced Learning Management systems (LMS) that can be used by Teachers/Subject experts to create lessons, courses online and deliver for advanced learners. In addition to all features described above, they also include resources for collaborative learning and online assessment for monitoring and improving the learning outcomes. Virtual classrooms and online Library management systems are available as optional add-ons.
